Page Authority works on a logarithmic scale or range from 1 to 100. Whereas Page Authority measures the predictive ranking strength of a web page, there is another metric by Moz called Domain Authority, which measures the strength of the entire website. Page Authority and Domain Authority are, however, similar than they are different because they are calculated using the same methodology.

Many online marketers use Page Authority as a checklist to determine any areas or specific page of the website that need updating or changing.


How is Page Authority Calculated?

Moz Page Authority is calculated based off different algorithm and data from the Mozscape web index and includes link counts, Moz Rank, MozTrust, and dozens of other metrics. Moz uses a similar scale as domain authority to score page authority, meaning a 100-point, logarithmic scale. Page Authority core of a web page fluctuates due to the fact that Moz is constantly updating their algorithm.

Moz uses almost fifty different ranking factors to calculate Page Authority score.

These factors include somethings like the quantity of pointing to the web page and the overall quality of the backlinks. Other factors include keyword density, traffic, and user behavior. Using all the factors, a Page Authority score is generated on a scale of 1 to 100. The better the scores, the better your chances of ranking in the SERPs.

Moz stated that these are some of the ranking factors they use to determine page authority:

  • The number of root domains linking to a web page.
  • The number of root domains linking to the web page using partial match anchor text.
  • The number of subdomains that link to the web page.
  • The number of quality websites linking to the web page.
  • The number of external links the web page has.
  • Social signals, such as the number of Facebook Likes, Twitter Retweets, LinkedIn Shares etc., a page has received.

Although another metric called Moz domain authority provides a better understanding of how the entire website is performing, it doesn’t mean that page authority isn’t as useful. In fact, the page authority of a website’s webpages has a direct impact on the overall domain authority as well as your search engine ranking. When your website is new with no backlinks or social signals, it starts from a page rank of 0 and it continues to grow with time. it's significantly easier to grow your score from 10 to 20 than it is to grow from 60 to 70.


Relevance of Moz Page Authority to SEO

Moz Page Authority is different from Google page rank. Moz Page Authority is a metric developed by Moz, a third party SEO company and its in no way affiliated with Google. So Google does not use Moz Page Authority to rank websites. However, since Moz uses backlinks and some other factors to rank websites, the same metrics Google uses in their ranking algorithm, Page Authority can give you a glimpse into whether your optimization efforts are working. But this alone does not affect how well you rank in Google.
